5/18/68 0900 hours sector King Zulu King
During the early morning hours Recon Team Knife was tasked with penetrating an uncontested Viet Cong sanctuary on MONKEY BONE ISLAND to locate a heavy weapon that was interdicting baot traffic on the delta.
RT knife was inserted on the Eastern tip of the Monkey Bone. During insertion it was noted that a VC trail watcher witnessed our landing. Rt knife slipped into the swamp. ONE-ONE Ryan Lowe was instructed to take half of the squad and recon the Southern coast of the island, while ONE-ZERO Blackjack took the other half and followed the Southern trail. In true SOG fasion RT knife moved without being detected along the entire length of the island from grids O-10 to J-2. At that point RT Knife was spotted by a local farmer who promptly reported us to the VC. ONE-ONE Lowe took his team and reconned the Southern point while ONE-ZERO Blackjack tried to locate the trail head at grid K-4. With ONE-TWO Mark Johnson on point followed by Sniper Philip Martin we moved in a Northeast direction. Just as Johnson arrived at the trail head he was ambushed by the VC at grid K-4. Machinegun fire ripped away the leaves and thunked into trees. Martin returned fire and while being supported by Sgt Blackjack broke contact and faded into the swamps having lost Johnson KIA. RT Knife reunited at grid J-3 and pushed through the swamp with the intention of sweeping East along the Northern coast of the island from the water. Having reincarnated at the East end of Monkey Bone Island Johnson was instructed to sweep West along the Northern coast. The hunt was on again. In no time Johnson was back on the radio with good news. Even though he had taken heavy fire a second time he located the turret in grid M-7. RT Knife requested an immediate boat extract. Johnson was instructed to make for the tree line and flag down the boat. With hard intel in hand we snatched Johnson without a moment to spare and our team was back together. We linked up with the 75th Rangers and 3rd Squad Delta at the Ammo Dump.
